The Knitted Knockers Knit-a-thon

13/5/2018

The Knitted Knockers Knit-a-thon took place yesterday (Sat 12 May) at Northside Primary School, in Gaborone.
The Colorado team brought yarn, needles and their knowledge, to the knitting team. Women came from as far as Mohembo, Maun and Serowe to attend the workshop. The knitters also included one man, from Otse Hospice. The Fighters - a local support group for people living with cancer - was also represented.
The group was learning to knit and crochet breast prosthesis, to be given away to women who have lost their own breasts due to breast cancer.
At the end of the day, the Colorado ladies donated bags of Knitted Knockers, to be given away through Princess Marina Hospital. The knitting ladies from Just a little Yarn Shop were given supplies in order to continue making knockers locally.

    About

The Journey of Hope Botswana is a not for profit organisation of volunteers whose aim is to promote breast cancer awareness in the country.

Since breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, early detection is a crucial part of the Journey of Hope Botswana mission.

The number of new cases of breast cancer and breast cancer deaths in sub-Saharan Africa is rising. Many women in Botswana, particularly in remote areas, die needlessly from a lack of information and awareness of the disease. Visiting rural areas and speaking to these women is imperative.

For this reason Journey of Hope Botswana runs an annual Big Journey, in which volunteers, many of whom are breast cancer survivors, embark on an odyssey, riding pink scooters to spread breast cancer awareness in Botswana.
