In Botswana Breast and Cervical Cancer are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women. Due to its unprecedented rise over the past ten years, cancer is now classified as a non-communicable (lifestyle related) disease, alongside diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and heart disease.
Hypertension, smoking, alcohol abuse, unhealthy diets and lack of exercise are risk factors for getting cancer. Journey of Hope Botswana, through the support of the Diacore Gaborone Marathon, rose to the challenge of creating nationwide awareness and destigmatisation of breast cancer. The underlying message is that early detection can save lives and a change in lifestyle can prolong life. The media campaign features real breast cancer fighters and survivors, who agreed to bare their scars and share their stories of hope. The couple featured below, for example, shared their journey of discovering a lump whilst the wife, Mrs Botho Gaborutwe, was breastfeeding. She speaks highly of the support she received from her family - and notably her husband Rre Moshe Gaborutwe - during her road to healing. Today she is one of the members of The Fighters Support Group, who share their stories and offer emotional support to those who are newly diagnosed.
