Self Examination Technique

Our teaching follows the Touch, Look, Check method. We use a low tech approach with our materials, suitable for any environment.

These include a flip chart for workshop sessions, paper based flyers in English and Setswana and our very popular t-shirt give-away. We also give away colouring books for children, allowing us to share our message to all ages.

How it is taught

JOHB strives to meet people where they live. In a country like Botswana, many are isolated by geography as well as a lack of resources, often resulting in a lack of information on issues such as the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

As part of advance preparations for a Big Journey or a single event, JOHB plans a visit to a venue that facilitates access to the public. Typically these venues include places like clinics, shopping malls and community centres.

JOHB always travels with the basic teaching tools used to teach the self examination technique.

The talks are conducted in Setswana and repeated throughout the event until all members of the public have had the opportunity to participate. After each talk, the public are invited to ask questions.

On the Big Journeys and if an event and its facilities allow, a doctor and nurses are present to conduct breast examinations for individuals who wish to use the service, once they have attended a talk.

The public is encouraged to undergo a breast exam with a gift of a T shirt once their examination is complete.

When collaborating with clinics, JOHB will supply info graphics posters and flyers to be used for ongoing awareness and future reference.

Our Awareness Material

We hand out thousands of t-shirts, leaflets, coloring books and info graphic posters for each clinic, on every Journey.

Feel free to download our presentation, posters and flyer on this page. Teaching this technique is as easy as Touch, Look, Check.
Give away t-shirts (white) sponsored by KBL and Crew / Rider t-shirts (pink) sponsored by Seriti. Thanks to our sponsors!

Sponsored by Bokamoso private Hospital

mammogram giveaways by BOKAMOSO

For the past two years, Bokamoso Private Hospital have generously sponsored 16 free Mammograms. These are given away over a period of 4 months - beginning of July to end of October. This is done through a call-in radio show on RB2. The lucky winner is then booked for an Ultrasound or Mammogram appointment at Bokamoso Private Hospital, where they are attended to by Dr Brighid Malone.
This initiative has resulted in an increase in inquiries to our office - a sign that the Touch. Look. Check message is sinking in.

once a month, every month

Let's Talk on RB2 - once a month, every month. Because breast cancer is not an October disease.

The featured couple below, Rre Moshe and Mme Botho Gaborutwe, lend their voices and breast cancer experience as a family, to the campaign radio ads.

Breast care matters: Love your Breasts!
